Information about RECOUP by people who have actually been there
RECOUP treatment - the facts
Some of the therapies (relevant to RSI patients) that the RECOUP website states are available at their clinics are:
- Physical & Occupational Therapy
- Myotherapy & Manual Therapy
- Chiropractic
- Craniosacral therapy
- Yoga, Relaxation Techniques, Breathing Exercises
- Biofeedback
- Tai Chi
- Alexander Technique
- Nutritional counselling
- Stress Management, Psychological Counseling, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Ergonomics & Body Mechanics Training
- Fitness Programmes, Strengthening, Aerobic Conditioning
The people contributing to this site spent a combined six months at the clinic in Bangalore and determined early on that chiropractic, craniosacral therapy, Alexander Technique, Stress Management and Psychological Counselling, were not available at any time. If you read the RECOUP website carefully, you will often note that although many specialists in these areas are mentioned, they are only referred to as "visiting" the clinic. We never met any of these "visitors".
Ergonomics and Body Mechanics Training was a series of powerpoint presentations given on an unergonomic workstation by junior therapists with no knowledge of the topic (see our photos section). Fitness programmes were provided by therapists with no specialist training in fitness and Tai Chi lessons were occasionally available from someone who did not work full time at the clinic.
No general or stress management counselling was available at all which was extremely detrimental to the overseas patients. Adjusting to life in India, being away from your support network, facing potential or current umemployment and enduring chronic pain is very stressful. Many patients are clinically depressed when they arrive and receive very little support.
RSI Treatment
Unlike what is stated on the website, Sharan's Protocol is NOT followed. Not one of the people contributing to this site went through this program although all were at the clinic full time for many months and evaluated by Dr Sharan.
The main issue with RECOUP is that even if many treatments are available, actually getting access to them is nearly impossible. The clinic is highly disorganised, appointments are often cancelled or shifted without your knowledge and therapists are often late or absent. There is no computerised appointment system or filing of patient notes. You are responsible for carrying any notes with you and bringing them to appointments. At each appointment you will have to explain your condition and suggest treatment yourself! This continues to happen even after months at the clinic as no therapists are dedicated exclusively to your care.
On arrival you are often promised a pick up from the airport but many people arrive only to find no-one waiting for them. Upon arrival in Jayanagar, you may or may not get the guesthouse room you were promised, you won't be met by anyone, shown how to get to the clinic or even booked an appointment with Dr Sharan.
